Turn a Canvas Frame into a Beautiful Picture Holder

Over the years I’ve bought several canvases to paint as a hobby and for creating artwork to decorate the home.  Both my daughter and I love to paint.  My daughter has been getting a lot better and developing the talent but I have so many of her old canvas paintings that are mostly just doodles.  I decided to repurpose one of those old canvases for this tutorial on how to turn a canvas frame into a beautiful picture holder.

Final canvas frame turned picture holder

This picture holder holds small pictures such as the ones from the Fuji Instax mini camera that has become so popular these days.  I remember growing up with the older version of a Polaroid camera. Back then you had to wait for quite a few minutes for the photo to actually show.  Its amazing how things have evolved, these days we just take a picture with the phone and text it to the family and that’s it.  Everyone has an updated picture!  No more having to wait to go to the photo shop to develop a film to see your favorite photos.  I still collect printed pictures, I love having them around the house so I still go to the photo shop to get pictures sometimes. I’ve even made my pictures in home art using Canvas World.

Whichever method for getting pictures you use, this old canvas frame turned picture holder will be great for decorating the house this season.

Materials needed for this lovely picture holder

  • 8 x 10 old canvas frame
  • chalk finish acrylic paint in vintage color
  • 1 inch burlap ribbon
  • 3/8 inch green satin ribbon
  • 3 pine cones
  • sliver glitter
  • E6000 glue
  • 6 mini clothes pins
  • mini paint brush
  • scissors

Materials for picture holder

First paint the canvas frame in the chalk finish acrylic paint in vintage color and allow to dry.

Cut three strings of 7 1/2 inches long of the burlap ribbon and three strings 7 1/2 inches long of the green satin ribbon.

Painted frame and cut ribbons to make the picture holder

Center the green ribbon over the burlap ribbon and glue the ends.

Ribbons glued together for the picture holder

Turn the frame to the back side and glue the three strings of ribbons with the green ribbon facing the front side of the frame.

While the ribbons dry, work on glittering up the pine cones.  Place a dot of glue in various pine ends and brush the silver glitter over those so that the glitter sticks.

Glue the glittery pine cones to one of the corners of the picture holder.  Then allow the glue to dry for a few minutes.

Lastly use two mini cloth pins for each ribbon section and add lovely family pictures.

You can also use this picture holder to hold the to-do list or the grocery shopping list.

Now, if you are a photographer or like taking pictures and using them to decorate your home I definitely recommend heading over to Canvas World. I love that you can create your own home décor with your own pictures. What is not to love from their service, they even do some expert photo retouching and the products are wonderful.

Finished picture holder

I love that this project helped me reuse an item that probably would have end up in a closet or taking space in the old bins.  Another project in which I have turned an old item into something new is my Upcycled Vase, head over and take a look at that other easy DIY project.  I love that these are ideas for reusing items around the house and turning them into something practical and new.

Looks great! I have some frames such as this but unfortunately I had to buy them and they don’t look as cute as yours. Thanks so much for linking up with me at my #UnlimitedMonthlyLinkParty 18, open until November 26. Shared.

Marbled Clay Palette DIY

These past few days I have been good at keeping my daily painting practice.
